Department/Site: School Site
Pay Rate: $31.33
Duration: 9-month contract
Expected Shift: Day 4×7.5-Hour (08:00 AM – 04:00PM)
Hours: 32.5 hours a week

Job Summary:
Under the general direction of the Site Administrator, the Paraprofessional: Moderate/Severe assists teachers in the overall education, guidance, and care of students with moderate to severe special needs. Paraprofessional: Moderate/Severe staff are assigned to various instructional settings.

Instructional Settings
Special Education Class/Self-Contained:
Services students with a primary disability of moderate to severe intellectual disability, autism, emotional disturbance, multiple disabilities, other health impairments, or other disabilities that are moderate to severe in nature.  Students assigned to this setting receive a majority of their educational program in a self-contained classroom with mainstreaming as deemed appropriate by the individual education program team. Special educational settings may pertain to preschool ages 3 – 5 years old, Transitional Kindergarten through 8th grade, or adult transition program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The following is a list of duties that are representative of the position and include but are not limited to:
  • Under direct guidance, provides academic instruction to students
  • Participates with a team in the implementation of behavioral and treatment plans
  • Communicates with students using speech appropriate to the student’s level of understanding including but not limited to, verbal, picture/symbol systems, technology, functional signs, and entry level sign language**
  • Assists in planning and preparing activities, equipment and materials
  • Supports students while mainstreaming in general education classes
  • Assists in ensuring a safe environment
  • Completes forms, logs and paperwork necessary to track eligible medical support and records data
  • Assists certificated staff in administering a variety of formal and informal assessments
  • Administer state and/or local assessments, as appropriate.
  • Collects and reviews student data such as strengths, methods, strategies best used in support of goals
  • Monitors and evaluates student progress and completes records accurately
  • Participates physically with students in activities as needed
  • Assists classroom teacher to supervise students including but not limited to recess, on and off the bus, during meals, and on field trips. 
  • Assists students as needed with life skills and routines including but not limited to accessing meals, changing clothes, and toileting
  • Depending on assigned grade level, performs a variety of infant/child care duties such as preparing meals and bottles, changing diapers, facilitating rest periods as well as planning
  • Assists in the management and housekeeping of the classroom
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Education as required by the “Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015”: High school diploma or equivalent AND two (2) years of higher education study (48 semester units); OR
  • Possession of an Associate’s or higher degree; OR
  • Met a rigorous standard of quality and able to demonstrate, through a formal State or local academic assessment, knowledge and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing and mathematics.
  • Possession of an appropriate valid California Driver’s License with evidence of insurability

Preferred Skills:

  • Coursework in education, psychology, child development, classroom behavior management and/or Early Childhood Education
  • Experience working with students with disabilities
  • Awareness of developmental levels in areas of instruction
  • Certifications: 
  • First Aid within 6 months of employment
  • Complete approved Guadalupe USD Behavior Management System (i.e. Handle with Care, CPI) within six (6) months of employment and maintain valid certification
  • CPR Certification within six (6) months of employment

Our client is a large school district, to be assigned at one of their affiliated school sites.
